McDonald’s Looking to Hire Older Workers

McDonald’s is working with the AARP to hire older workers.

The fast food chain is looking to work with the interest group to hire approximately 250,000 people.

McDonald’s needs new workers for early morning and afternoon shifts. The early shifts will start at 5 AM, as McDonald’s has reported that the fast food giant struggles to find young people who are keen to work at that hour of the morning. The program will only be launched in a few states initially, and will target older people in the “low income” bracket. The program is supposed to expand and go nationwide before the end of the summer.

Americans aged 55 and older are becoming a larger factor in the labor industry. Driven primarily by changing demographics which are seeing people live longer while having fewer children, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that this age bracket will make up 25% of the labor industry’s workforce. There are also many older people, including 65+ year-olds who have no intention of retiring soon. AARP released in a statement that they believe this is a great opportunity for those in these age brackets to continue to work.
