Material Goods No More

The days of obsessing over material objects are over, according to a new study by OnePoll and EventBrite. Americans nowadays are spending their extra money on experiences over items. Nowadays, it’s not about having the most expensive new shoes or watch. It’s about spending that hard earned extra cash on trips of a life time. Whether it be concerts, vacations, or anything else that brightens the mood – that’s the place where Americans are gonna dump more dollars.

We’re almost twice as likely to feel guilty about our spending habits if we use them on material goods, despite the need for retail therapy every now and again. Of the 2,000 Americans polled, two-thirds would rather be known for the experiences they’ve had and the places they’ve been rather than the goods they own.

Especially in the age of social media, people love posting pictures of themselves having fun at wild and interesting festivals or vacations. This is the case since these experiences provide positive energy and the feeling of being connected, because you’re filling your body with a longer rush of dopamine while getting to share that experience with other people around you. It’s an all around fulfilling thing.

So next time you’re about to “Add to Cart,” maybe you should “Enhance your Life” instead.
