Lyft & Affordable Food

Lyft has launched a new program with the stated intent of combating “food deserts”.

Food deserts refer to more remote areas where healthy and affordable food is harder to access.

The plan which Lyft has launched involves providing discounted rides to local grocery stores in at least 15 American and Canadian cities. The issue that Lyft has jumped into is a serious one for many in North America, that being a lack of easy access to healthy, affordable food. Indeed, obesity has been proven to be more of a phenomenon among the poor in North America. Many people are forced between the choice of overly expensive produce, or cheap but terribly unhealthy junk food. This isn’t always the case of course, but it’s an issue that other businesses have taken notice of in the past.

The program will run under the name “Grocery Access Program” and will be directed to those living in low-income, rural areas of North America. The locations will be ones where access to grocery stores and/or effective transportation are limited. Lyft will also be teaming up with local partners in the areas where the program will be operative. A report by The Verge suggests that access to the program will be limited to individuals who live in “food deserts” and qualify for food stamps.
