Journalists See Facebook’s “War Room” in Europe

Facebook is going War Games on election meddlers.

Facebook has officially opened a “special operations center” in its European headquarters in Dublin which is meant to target election meddling in Europe. The center has been wrapped off just ahead of May’s European Union voting.

Approximately 40 employees are currently sitting at rows of desks, many of whom have two computers in front of them. There are also many signs representing individual countries in the European Union. The screens primarily show trends surrounding Facebook’s services, including Instagram and WhatsApp. The European Union’s parliamentary elections will take place from May 23rd to May 26th in 28 different countries. Facebook’s war room in Europe is modeled after the company’s war room in the US for midterm elections and the command post they set up in Singapore for India’s elections.

Facebook is currently very eager to demonstrate that the company takes threats on its platform seriously. Governments around the world have pressured Facebook into taking more action to combat misinformation on the platform. This is perhaps why Facebook invited about two dozen journalists into the war room last week to show the world just how serious they are.
