India’s Jet Airways is Out of Money & Shutting Down

India’s Jet Airways has officially ceased operations amid mounting debt.

Jet Airways is India’s oldest private airline, and was one of the first to emerge during India’s economic liberalization in the 1990s. A long time ago, Jet Airways had more aircraft in operation than any other airline in India. The once 120-plane-strong fleet had been reduced to only seven earlier this week, and the airline’s efforts to draw in new investments have come to nothing. Jet Airways has now landed its last operating plane in Mumbai, for now.

Creditors are still showing signs of hope that a bidding process with potential investors will save the distraught airline. If this does not happen, Jet Airways may declare insolvency under the country’s 2016 bankruptcy law, and creditors may aim to recover their debts within 180 days by dismantling the company.

The airline has received much praise and emotional good-byes. This is indeed a strange site for an airline, as most social media mention of airlines is regarding delays or other annoyances.
