Hiring Tips For Small Businesses

As a small business owner, finding the right candidate for your job can be difficult. Making the wrong decision could lead the company you’ve poured your heart into crumble. That’s why its important to be thorough during interviews and make sure you don’t try and take shortcuts to save time or money. Here are some hiring tips:

References
A lot of business owners think calling all references on a list is a time waster, so they only call one or none at all. Listening to someone else speak about the candidate can be enlightening to extra pros or cons. Even if it takes a few days for the reference to get back to you, always do your research.

Background Checks
Speaking of doing research, a lot of smaller businesses don’t conduct background checks because it requires a third party and costs money. But if you end up hiring someone that has a mar on their record that you didn’t know about, it could ruin your business.

Hiring Isn’t A Favor
Don’t pick your family or your friends over real candidates as a favor. It can be tempting to “help someone out” by pity hiring them, but you have to be just as strict in the candidacy process as the biggest names. If you want your company to grow, don’t take risks on under qualified people because its “a favor.”

There’s a ton more ways to help your small business grow, but it all starts with hiring the right employees. So even if you’re short-staffed for a little while, don’t throw just anyone in that position. Find the right candidate so that the business will grow in the right direction.
