Google Steps Back on Cutting Ties With Huawei

Google has put a pause on their recent decision to cut ties with Huawei.

This new announcement comes as the US has granted a 90-day extension on some of the trade restrictions they’ve placed on the Chinese telecom giant.

Google reported on Sunday that they would be severing ties with Huawei in order to comply with Washington’s decision to put Huawei on the ‘entity list.’ Just one day later the US Commerce Department decided to allow a 90-day licence for phone companies to continue working with Huawei to keep existing networks online and provide security for users. The Commerce Department added another 69 entities to the trade blacklist last week, including Huawei. The trade blacklist is a list of entities which are deemed to be threats to US national security.

Recently authorities have been cautioning that Huawei’s connection to the Chinese government could result in spying wherever Huawei has hardware. Huawei has denied these claims, though tensions between Huawei and the US government have been intensifying behind the backdrop of the US-China trade war. The world’s two largest economies have been hitting each other with tit-for-tat tariffs, and Huawei has become wrapped up in the situation.

Huawei did not immediately respond to requests for comments on Google’s decision or any plans going forward. Google now has 90 days to wrap up its business with Huawei, unless the trade war and US-China relations take another turn.
