Google Picks Chicago For New Finance Division

Google plans to expand into Chicago, adding hundreds of new jobs in the city. This will be Google’s second office in Chicago, with the first located in the West Loop.

The tech giant has planned this move as a part of their national expansion plan, which includes spending more than $13 billion on new and expanded offices and data centers in the United States. There are currently about 1,000 employees in Google’s West Loop office, with the company planning to lease an additional 132,000 square feet of office space in the same area.

Based in California, Google’s national expansion plan includes new construction that will employ 10,000 workers according to the company’s CEO, Sundar Pichai. New and expanded data centers are planned for Nebraska, Ohio, Texas, Nevada, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Virginia. Google will have offices in 24 states by the end of 2019, which should give them an edge in their competition in the cloud-computing space with Microsoft and Amazon. Major expansions are also planned in Google’s Seattle office. Last year, Google spent more than $9 billion on new construction and expansion. Continuing that growth pattern is a top priority for the company.
