Gas Prices Are Going Up In These States

Several states are experiencing a hike due to fuel taxes.

Gas prices in the US have generally been falling in recent weeks. Different factors cause gas prices in different parts of the country to change suddenly, and for now gas prices are falling. That being said, several states should see an increase in prices at the pumps due to new taxes. According to AAA, the national average gas price was $2.70 per gallon on Friday, down from last month’s $2.82.

California will see gas taxes rise by 5.6 cents per gallon, raising the rate from 41.7 cents per gallon to 47.3 cents per gallon. The average price of gas in California was $3.74 per gallon as of last Friday. This increase to California’s gas tax was legislated back in 2017, and a 2018 attempt to repeal the increase failed.

Illinois just doubled its fuel tax, pushing the tax rate from 19 cents per gallon to 38 cents per gallon. As a result, the price of gas in Illinois was $2.89 per gallon as of last Friday.

South Carolina has gone through a far more modest tax increase. The average price of gasoline in South Carolina is now $2.35 per gallon on a two-cent-per-gallon tax hike.

Ohio will also be seeing an increase of prices at the pump, as the price of gas will rise 10.5 cents on Monday. The price hike in Ohio was approved back in April, and the average price of gas will be $2.67 per gallon.

Lastly, Tennessee has increased its gas tax by one cent per gallon. The price of gas in Tennessee is $2.40 per gallon as of last Friday.
