Former Nissan Chief’s Prison Time Extended

Last month, former Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn was unanimously dismissed from his position and the company. Ghosn was arrested prior to his dismissal on suspicion of falsifying financial documents, under-reporting his salary by millions of dollars, and using the unreported money on personal purchases. Ghosn and his family have asserted that, though the money was not reported, it was not actually a decided amount, nor was it paid, so Nissan allegedly never suffered any actual loss. Regardless of his assertions, it has been decided that Ghosn will remain in the custody of Japanese police through the New Year. At the moment, he is not to be released from his detainment until January 11th.

Executive Greg Kelly was also arrested on suspicion of collaborating with Ghosn on the salary reports, and was detained along with Ghosn. However, Kelly is already free, having been released on December 25th on a 70 million yen bail (approximately $635,600 USD). According to a statement from Kelly, he was suffering from a neck ailment and needed medical attention, which may have been a contributing factor to his early release.

Nissan is currently cooperating with the Japanese police on an internal investigation. If there were any additional accomplices to Ghosn and Kelly’s scheme, Nissan intends to find them.
