Don’t be a passive part of the interview process.
When you go to a job interview, you’re the one who’s supposed to be answering questions. That’s why it’s surprising to a potential boss if you turn the tables with some questions for them. It can also provide you with some insights into the company you’re looking into.
Here are a few good questions for you to ask a potential boss:
- Is the mission statement important to the company? If the person you’re interviewing with has problems answering this question, it could be a sign of low job satisfaction at that company. It’s an especially bad sign if the interviewer doesn’t even know what their company stands for. If even an interviewer doesn’t know the basics, it’s likely that most employees there just see their job as a means to an end.
- What are the most productive meetings? This question can reveal a telling answer. If the list goes on and on, then that workplace most likely has too many meetings, many of which are unproductive. No one likes wasting time at pointless meetings that are poorly organized. The logistical process a company employs is something worth considering before taking a job.
- What’s your favorite part about working here? According to Glass Door, you really want to listen to their answer. You should pay attention to their body language and energy level on top of what they say. If there’s nothing to be said, or nothing of substance, that’s a bad sign.
- How do you measure success in this position? This question can give you a look into how you’ll be graded in the future, should you take the job.
- How’s your relationship with junior employees? A decision maker’s ability to get along and work with their subordinates is a telling factor in what your workday will look like if you take a job there. It will let you know if there’s a good organizational structure in place at that company.
