Facebook Shedding Its American User Base

Despite its controversies, Facebook has been blowing up around the world in recent years, with users from many different countries signing up every day. However, according to a recent study, Facebook is not doing nearly as well in the U.S.

Edison Research conducted the study on digital media consumer behavior, and they came up with a few key findings. First and foremost, Facebook now has 15 million less users than they did in 2017, suggesting that far more Americans are moving on from the social media superpower, in comparison to Americans joining the social network. Of course, Facebook has become far more international as time has gone on, so the company’s quarterly earnings report likely won’t reflect this data.

Facebook’s quarterly earnings report showed immense growth in the last quarter. Earnings reports have reflected healthy levels of growth during the entire period covered by the Edison Research study. This goes to show that Facebook is truly a global network, which doesn’t rely on it’s home country for its user base and earnings. The news is still good for Facebook, as Facebook-owned Instagram took many of the users that Facebook lost. Competition from Twitter, Snapchat, and Pinterest also likely contributed, at least marginally.
