Facebook is Testing a Dedicated News Tab

This new addition to Facebook’s platform will offer new opportunities for publishers to monetize their work.

The social network began testing its ambitious new idea on its flagship mobile app on Friday. Facebook is set to host reporting from big publishers including USA Today and The Wall Street Journal. Facebook is already paying some, but not all, of the participating publishers for their part in the project. Facebook announced this newest experiment in a blog post reading: “People want and benefit from personalized experiences on Facebook, but we know there is reporting that transcends individual experience. We want to support both.” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg also took the opportunity to discuss the new news tab in New York City on Friday, alongside News Corp. CEO Robert Thomson.

The addition of a new dedicated news section on Facebook will offer a new revenue stream for workers in the changing news media industry. However, there are of course no guarantees that this new addition to Facebook’s platform will last. For now, the news tab will be curated by human editors working at Facebook, similarly to how Apple operates its news app. The tab offers the personalization characteristic of Facebook, so you will be presented with content based on what you read. The company claims that the news tab will offer you a more personalized experience over time, while allowing you to make choices such as hiding specific publishers or articles that you’re not interested in.
