Epic Games Struck With Lawsuit

The gaming company that brought the world Fortnite is now under fire from parenting support groups, among others. The game, which made Epic Games over $2.4 billion in 2018, has recently made the news due to concerned parents and their support groups which have popped up on social media.

Amid the rise of concerned parents and their respective support networks, comicbook.com reports on the controversy surrounding a new in-game mechanic that some allege is predatory in nature. In-game “loot boxes” have so far been at the center of the controversy. One parent has filed a lawsuit against Epic Games, alleging that the “Llama” loot boxes are part of a predatory scheme that exploits Fortnite players. The allegation is that the llama loot boxes are a part of “predatory” practices such as “lower price point” that encourage minors to spend real world money on in-game purchases. It likely doesn’t help that the in-game appearance of the llama is quite childish, yet leads to money being spent.

Beyond ‘freemium’ games, gaming companies have been getting creative with ways to make money. Many games out today are free to play, but will entice players to make purchases that enhance their experience. While this is fine on it’s own, there will inevitably be some level of conflict between parents and gaming companies. Many players of these games are adults, but if other companies are less careful they could find themselves in some trouble if they are believed to be encouraging minors to spend money through exploitative funnels.
