Disney Is Spending How Much On A Star Wars TV Show?

Despite “Solo: A Star Wars Story” disappointing at the box office, Disney is still going strong on the bandwagon that Star Wars is an unbeatable franchise, especially after the record-breaking success of “The Force Awakens.” Disney is currently in the works of making the Star Wars jump to television, but its going to cost them big time.

First off, Disney sold the rights for classic Star Wars movies to AT&T’s Turner Broadcasting so that stations such as TBS and TNT could air those films on their channels. The deal, which was set to last until 2024, sold for $275 million. But now, Disney wants those rights back so that it can stream the older Star Wars movies on its new streaming platform.

In return, Turner not only wants their money back, but additional compensation and replacement programming to fill the voids left behind by the classic Star Wars films. Currently, no price is in the air, and talking seems to have stalled.

But that won’t stop Disney from creating a brand new, live-action Star Wars television show… and they’re not afraid to spend big bucks on it. According to the New York Times, Disney will spend around $100 million on a 10 episode series that takes place seven years after “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.” Iron Man director Jon Favreau says that the debut project for Disney’s streaming service is perfect because “Star Wars is a big world, and Disney’s new streaming service affords a wonderful opportunity to tell stories that stretch out over multiple chapters.”
