China-U.S. Talks to Continue in Washington

President Xi Jin Ping and President Trump have tentative plans to meet next week to work out the details of any remaining differences between the countries. President Trump has said it would be “an honor” to remove tariffs on $250 billion of imports from China if talks next week yield an acceptable agreement.

American and Chinese diplomats met in Beijing this week to negotiate in an effort to beat President Trump’s March 2nd deadline. After this date, the United States will raise tariffs, but President Trump has indicated on multiple occasions that if the U.S. and China come close to reaching an agreement, he’s willing to provide an extension to that deadline.

Many issues involving trade with China remain unresolved, however. The final agreement will include a “memoranda of understanding” between the United States and China according to American officials.

One of the most contentious issues at hand is China’s ability to invest large amounts of money from government institutions in advanced manufacturing sectors like artificial intelligence, commercial aircraft, manufacturing, and semiconductors that compete directly with the United States. Both China and the United States have expressed concerns about national security, as well.
