Box Office Breakdown: Eli Roth’s Time To Shine

Some of the goriest movies in recent history, such as Cabin Fever, were directed by Eli Roth, someone who is no stranger to the horror genre. Therefore, some would think that, if he tried to make a children’s movie, he would fail miserably. Those people were wrong.

Over the past box office weekend, his first children’s movie entitled “The House With A Clock In Its Walls” debuted at the number one spot domestically. The family-friendly film, although still a bit creepy, raked in a surprising $27 million, more than what it was predicted to make. This was Roth’s biggest directorial debut to date, which means he may have found his niche in movie making. Maybe.

The film garnered a 68% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is generally average. And since the film used pretty cheap CGI effects, it only cost around $40 million to make. Therefore, after international releases are factored in, it should have made back its budget by its sophomore weekend.

Speaking of sophomore weekends, “A Simple Favor” earned just over $10 million in its second weekend, taking the number two spot by a hair. The Nun still has her head in the holy box office as she haunts the back line at number 3.
