Box Office Breakdown: Big Sharks, Small Scares

This past weekend, Jason Statham’s “The Meg” proved analysts and reviewers wrong, and shark fans couldn’t be happier. Without taking into consideration the Fast and Furious franchise, “The Meg” was Statham’s best movie debuts of his career by nearly $10 million dollars. So how much of chunk did this monster shark movie bite out of the box office? Domestically, “The Meg” made around $44.5 million. This total was double what most analysts predicted, making it a “best-case scenario” for Warner Bros. Not only did it do well in the states, but oversees it pulled in another $97 million which brings the total gross for its first weekend to a little over $140 million. Considering the film itself cost $130 million, the movie is already in the green zone so it’ll hopefully be smooth sailing for the rest of its box office run.

But what about the rest of the movies debuting this weekend? Well, they didn’t fare too well. “Mission Impossible ` Fallout” took second place with $20 million domestically, but let’s remember that this is the third week of the Tom Cruise starring movie, so that’s still a considerable amount of money. Following in third place is Disney’s “Christopher Robin” which nabbed $12 million.

So the question many people are asking is “Where’s Slender Man?” Well, don’t look behind you. He might be right there. With very bland and distasteful reviews, the horror flick based on a viral “creepypasta” story showed that the time of Slender Man has come to an end. What was once a sensation and a video game everyone was daring to play is now a dud movie that brings barely any scares or narration to the screen. Its debut total was $11.3 million domestic, which just barely beats its $10 million dollar production budget.

Next week, we’ll get to see if “Crazy Rich Asians” makes Warner Bros. crazy rich again.
