The shooting in Odessa on Saturday which claimed seven lives has led to an outpouring of sympathy and support from those that want to help.

Unfortunately, scammers have already seen an opportunity to take advantage of peoples’ sympathies and are trying to scam donors through false crowdfunding channels.

According to the Better Business Bureau, there are scams among the crowdfunding campaigns launched for the shooting victims’ families. “We see fake pages on all the crowdfunding sites after there’s any kind of disaster,” Vice President of Public Relations and Communications for the Better Business Bureau Serving North Central Texas Phylissia Clark said. Fortunately, some established crowdfunding companies have recognized this trend in the past and have put some safeguards in place. In particular, GoFundMe has put together several layers of security for crowdfunding campaigns. Among them, they have their Trust and Safety team reviewing all campaigns related to the shooting in Odessa. They also use technical tools to verify the identities of campaign organizers and beneficiaries, and they verify bank information before transferring any money. They’ve also created a ‘verified’ list of legitimate campaigns, promising all donations will reach the families of the victims.

When it comes to the red flags for crowdfunding scams, unfortunately there’s less you can see compared to most other scams. According to Clark, the most important thing for you to do is to research before donating. Clark recommends that you reach out to the organizer of any campaign for the Odessa shooting victims’ families and ask a few simple questions. You should also only use a reputable crowdfunding medium when you send money. If you believe you’ve been scammed, you can reach out to the BBB, which meets with law enforcement on a monthly basis to go over all the campaigns that appear to be fake. If you think you’ve been scammed by a user on a site like GoFundMe, you can report it to the website as well.
