There are many ways in which genetic testing could be useful, but unfortunately one of the most significant uses is currently in the area of scams.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) reports that genetic testing scams are popping up across the US. The scam typically involves false cheek swab testing promises which are most commonly targeted at Medicaid recipients. Genetic testing scammers take advantage of many different practices and attend many different kinds of events to find new targets. These scammers will often use telemarketing, door-to-door visits, visits to senior centers, and several other methods to find their next target.

The scam’s focal point is an offer of genetic testing, but the offer is then used to get your personal information. The main purpose of the cover of genetic testing by these scammers is to take advantage of Medicaid beneficiaries by making them believe they need to take part, at which point the information the target provides will be put towards identity theft and/or billing fraud. Some victims are even told that taking the swab is necessary for them to be able to keep their coverage.

The best ways to avoid these scams involve a bit of common sense and suspicion. If you get a swab testing kit delivered to your home, don’t take the test. Instead, just take note of the seller’s information so you can report them. Only a physician is allowed to order genetic testing, so if your doctor didn’t inform you about their order, it’s most likely a scam.
