Behaviors to Avoid in the Workplace

A recent survey has revealed the top 5 behaviors that breach workplace etiquette.

While everyone is unique and people have their differences, there are certain things that are wrong in any context. There are also certain unspoken rules between employers and employees that are often misunderstood. Here are the 5 worst behaviors that you should never engage in at work:

  1. Emails during the night. 81% of employees feel obliged to answer work-related communications after office hours. Another 45% of people say they feel more stressed when receiving work-related communications off the job. The truth is you normally don’t need to answer work emails in the middle of the night. You can usually stay vigilant enough by working hard and staying on the ball during office hours. It’ll certainly annoy your coworkers less.
  2. 90% of bosses believe that chronic lateness is unacceptable. This should be an obvious one, but being late all the time demonstrates a lack of respect for your boss and coworkers. It also reduces productivity, which a boss can’t abide.
  3. When it comes to the things bosses do that annoy employees, picking favorites is among the worst for both men and women. Picking favorites makes others feel undervalued, and it will inevitably make employees unhappy if they feel their hard work is not as appreciated as their coworker’s likable personality.
  4. Workplace gossip is another terrible idea. 66% of men and 70% of women believe that gossip at work is unacceptable. So, if you’re gossiping at work, you’re likely upsetting at least one of your coworkers.
  5. Unwanted advances are especially unwelcome in the workplace. While unwanted advances are never fun, in the workplace they are seen as even worse. 82% of women and 81% of men agree that unwanted advances in the workplace are an abuse of power.

If you can refrain from these behaviors in the workplace, common sense should take care of the rest. Workplaces are serious places, where people come together to accomplish great things while advancing their personal goals. Treat the work environment with the respect it deserves, and you will do well!
