A lawsuit against AT&T is now underway over allegations that the company inflated DirecTV Now (now known as AT&T TV) subscriber numbers.

The lawsuit against AT&T is seeking class action status as the company is accused of inflating subscriber numbers. The lawsuit alleges that AT&T inflated subscriber numbers by creating fake users with the approval of management. The allegations are of a top-to-bottom scheme that was devised in order to make AT&T look better to investors at a time when the company was struggling with financial and technical issues. According to the lawsuit, the company’s management encouraged employees to charge DirecTV Now subscription fees to customers’ accounts without their knowledge.

Among the allegations, the lawsuit alleges that employees at AT&T tacked up to three accounts for every individual customer’s phone number. This includes the accounts of those who just provided their phone number to get a free trial. Other allegations include accusations that employees ran customers’ credit cards three times and in some cases potential customers who’d received a free trial were charged for a subscription despite never providing consent for the charges and making it clear they didn’t want to subscribe. Lastly, sales employees are alleged to have made and used fake email accounts in most of these instances. AT&T, for its part, has spoken to Bloomberg and made it clear that they plan “to fight these baseless claims in court.”
