Amazon Shutting Down Chinese Storefront

China doesn’t need Amazon to sell its products for it.

Amid the challenge presented by entrenched rivals within China, Amazon reports that they will close their online store. The company plans to have their Chinese online store fully shut down by July 20.

Amazon has reported that the changes will allow them to focus even more on selling overseas goods and cloud services in China. The move provides even more indication of China’s massive, home-grown rivals to Amazon. These factors make it more difficult for Amazon to build momentum in China, when compared to most other countries. An Amazon spokesperson told Reuters that amazon.cn will cease operations of their marketplace and stop providing seller services as well. “We are working closely with our sellers to ensure a smooth transition and to continue to deliver the best customer experience possible,” the spokesperson said.

Chinese sellers looking to sell their products outside of China will still be able to do so through Amazon Global Selling.
