Airbnb is starting a new initiative called “Airbnb Backyard.” Its goal is to create homes that are made for sharing. The company wants to create a brand new approach to building, designing and sharing homes.
The plan is to create homes that will have modular floor plans and interchangeable roofs. Airbnb Backyard is planned to use new manufacturing techniques, smart tech, and Airbnb customer feedback to design these homes for the perfect experience. They plan to start testing prototypes in 2019, with the majority of the building materials being sustainable.
The initiative is led by co-founder Joe Gebbia who wants to create more sustainable homes, since home production is increasing significantly over the globe. He believes Airbnb has a responsibility to improve how homes are built and shared. Gabbia also stated that there is supposed to be 2.5 trillion square feet of new construction by 2060, which is the equivalent of building a new Paris every week. With Airbnb being located in 200 countries and having over 5 million listings, they are poised to be an asset to the home development industry.
